Daniella Mooney
Paintings
Blue Projects presents the first solo exhibition in the UK of recent paintings by Daniella Mooney.
Mooney works across multiple mediums including sculpture, painting, and installation. Her sculptural work centers on the process of using wood, stone and natural materials to ground a deeper understanding of her place in relation to the environment around her. This pursuit is further explored in her landscape painting, where Mooney draws inspiration from her interactions with the natural environment during her time spent hiking in the mountains. Focused on the relationship between light and stone, her paintings reveal shifts in terrain and visual perception and the way that these can influence an experience.
This exhibition brings together landscape paintings of both the Western Cape in South Africa and – following her recent relocation to Berlin – the Alps across Germany and Italy. The paintings act as markers of place and capture Mooney’s observations of two different landscapes – one that is familiar to the artist and one that was explored for the first time. The quick, gestural marks evoke the process of discovery and recording and are rooted in the keen observation of the world around her.
The small scale of Mooney’s paintings and their cropped compositions bring to mind the process of her sculptural practice and the act of carving and working intimately with natural materials. In her sculptural work, Mooney is focused on the physical and spatial interaction with an object; in her painting, the perceptive experience is central to how the body is positioned in relation to its surroundings. In this collection of paintings, Mooney presents the viewer with isolated scenes cropped from the expansiveness of the landscape and offers moments of concentrated energy and focused thought.
