Melody as Truth
Melody of Truth (MAT) – the record label Nash runs out of Amsterdam – has been releasing gorgeous, dynamic and unhurried music since Nash’s self-titled EP, Phantom Actors in 2014. All but three of MAT’s subsequent releases feature Nash in one form or another, alongside longterm collaborators such as Suzanne Kraft, Gigi Masin (who, together with Marco Sterk are Gaussian Curve) and Kyle Martin as Land Of Light. Other beautiful MAT releases include Palta’s painterly LP, Universel, and Tourist Kid’s otherworldly LP, Crude Tracer.
Recent releases include Jonny Nash and Suzanne Kraft’s second collaborate album, A Heart So White, which was written and recorded in the Willem Twee Concertzaal, a converted synagogue in Den Bosch, Holland using the hall’s mechanical drawer organ and Steinway piano; the record represents both a continuation of the working philosophy adopted during the recording of their debut, Passive Aggressive (2017), but also marks a shift away from the exploration of virtual instruments and environments, towards acoustic instrumentation, breath, air and physical space. And, after a seven-year hiatus following the release of their self-titled debut LP on ESP Institute, Land of Light’s second LP, The World Lies Breathing; written and composed over the course of two years, Nash and Martin utilise a combination of acoustic instruments, contact microphones and Martin’s self-built modular synthesiser to create an organic landscape that emphasises the space between sounds.
