Galen Löfstedt is a sculptor, carpenter and photographer working out of his remote farm in rural South Africa. He creates furniture pieces that hold a deep connection with the spirit and the beauty of his natural surroundings.
Working in smooth, flowing London plane and 125 million-year-old dolerite rock, Löfstedt creates pieces that are functional, exquisitely executed, and firmly grounded in his homeland.
The Tribal Chair is reminiscent of a tribal chair used in traditional council settings, and is therefore intended as a piece of furniture that facilitates deep thinking and reflection, whereas the Coffee Table, described by Löfstedt as ‘monolithic’ with its volcanic dolerite base, serves as a place for social gathering. The Pebble is directly influenced by the erosion-smoothed skimming pebbles that form along the banks of the river snaking through Löfstedt’s Underberg farm, a setting for both fly fishing and contemplation.
